Juneau, Alaska's Capital City
Juneau became the territorial capital after Sitka in 1900. Although it sets on the mainland, Juneau is the only US capital that can't be reached by road. You approach Juneau through Gastineau Channel which divides the mainland from Douglas Island, home of the former Treadwell Mine. Juneau is a city for one reason: GOLD was discovered here in 1880, and it quickly became Alaska's largest city. Juneau virtually erupts from the sea with Mt Roberts and Mt Juneau as backdrops. Just a few miles away in the "valley," is N. America's most visited glacier, the Mendenhall.
